CPD program-level requirements in Aotearoa New Zealand

The College provides a range of tools and resources to help you navigate the CPD requirements relating to cultural safety, health inequities, professionalism and ethical practice in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Cultural safety standards

The Medical Council of New Zealand (MCNZ) requires doctors to meet cultural safety standards.

Cultural safety focuses on the patient and provides space for patients to be involved in decision-making about their own care, and contribute to the achievement of positive health outcomes and experiences.

Program-level requirements

Program-level requirements are activities that facilitate professional development across the breadth of medical practice, including those relating to cultural safety. Engagement in these activities should include opportunities for reflection on your own biases and attitudes, to help you understand how these can impact patient care.

There are no specific numbers of hours that should be allocated to activities relating to cultural safety; however, it’s recommended that you:

consider some of these activities in your professional development plan (PDP)

use this information during your annual conversation to reflect and discuss your goals for the next CPD cycle

Please note that from 1st January 2024:

you will be able to track hours spent on these activities from your CPD portal dashboard

program-level requirements will also be mandatory for Board and Council members, committee chairs and training supervisors

Professionalism and ethical practice

As much as possible, mini传媒入口 CPD program participants in Aotearoa New Zealand should engage in activities that enhance professionalism and ethical practice.

All participants are strongly encouraged to include these activities in their professional development plan (PDP) for this current cycle.

On completing your reflection, it may be helpful to consider the following questions:

Did the activity demonstrate professionalism and ethics?

If not, how could this be achieved in future activities?

What professionalism and ethics elements have you learned through undertaking the activity?

Please note that you should also include these considerations in your structured annual conversation for each CPD cycle.
